I want to give you an idea of who I am. I am a born-again Christian, Dominican-American girl who grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

Although throughout my life I always identified as a Christian, I did not know what being Christian was actually like until a few years ago.

Typically, you go about your life trying to be a good person and stay out of jail. That is what my primary goal in life was up until 2012. I still, however, do not want to go to jail, but the good person idea has completely changed.

For most of my teenage years, I did not go to church. I began to attend a charismatic church. I was there for about three years thinking I was saved.

It wasn’t until I left and began to visit a reformed church that I learned I was not. It didn’t happen overnight.

The reformed church I began to attend was different in every way I could imagine, but it was good. The songs were all centered on the gospel, and the sermons were based on the text, not a verse made to teach what you wanted to hear but rather explaining what the text was about.

Over the next couple of months I learned so much about the bible that I did not know, and yet I still was not saved.

After months of going to this church and thinking. I’m a good person, I do everything right, God revealed to me one morning that that was not true. I thought I could be saved based on my works, but God opened my eyes and showed me that I could not work for my salvation. That I was a sinner and deserved to pay for my sins.

At that moment I was overcome with fear. I knew I was doomed to an eternity in hell, but God had mercy on me.

I was reminded of the gospel I had been hearing: Jesus came to pay for the sins of the elect so that all who repent and turn away from their sin, put all their trust in him and not their own works, will be saved. I cried out to God for my salvation, and he listened, and he has kept me until this day.

It’s not easy but I rejoice knowing one day I will dwell with him in eternity. This is the good news of the gospel.

God saved me and he can save you too, if you cry out, repent of your sins and turn to him alone knowing there is nothing you can do to make yourself righteous. Jesus paid it all.

Here are a few of the bible verses that keep me grounded in the gospel:

Romans 3:10-12

10 as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Romans 5:8

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 6:23

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
