There are so many reasons to be thankful that if we sat down to write them, we would write indefinitely. My list would probably start a little something like this: “I am thankful for my home, my family and friends, my church, my job…..” I would start with the “big” things and then work my way down to the “smaller” things like: ”my coat, gloves, hats, socks….”

So you see, if we did list absolutely everything we are grateful for, we can go on forever, which should always be in our minds. We should always be grateful for everything. This season, I think about all that is happening in the world, and I am even more grateful for my peace in Christ. It can be easy to be overwhelmed with life in general, politics, and our jobs, but at the end of the day, I remind myself to look past the temporal and focus on the eternal. Sure, things may be difficult now, but it won’t be forever, and I have a savior who cares for me and provides everything I need and, even things I don’t need.

When I think of this, I am reminded of the song ”My Heart is Filled with Thankfulness” by Keith & Kristyn Getty. It helps me meditate on God’s faithfulness throughout the year. I hope this season also lets you think about God’s goodness and faithfulness. I will place the lyrics to the Getty’s song below for you to read and mindfully think of the words and the true meaning of this holiday for us Christians.

“My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who bore my pain;
Who plumbed the depths of my disgrace
And gave me life again;
Who crushed my curse of sinfulness
And clothed me in His light
And wrote His law of righteousness
With pow'r upon my heart.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who walks beside;
Who floods my weaknesses with strength
And causes fears to fly;
Whose ev'ry promise is enough
For ev'ry step I take,
Sustaining me with arms of love
And crowning me with grace.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To him who reigns above,
Whose wisdom is my perfect peace,
Whose ev'ry thought is love.
For ev'ry day I have on earth
Is given by the King;
So I will give my life, my all,
To love and follow him.”

-My Heart is Filled with Thankfulness

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;

    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise

For the Lord is a great God,

    and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth;

    the heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,

    and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

– Psalm 95:1-6
